MANY areas in the city suffered a water supply shortfall for the nth time Sunday because of the dependence of the Cagayan de Oro Bulk Inc. (Cobi) on the unstable power supply in Baungon, Bukidnon.

It was the sixth time in June for the water supply from Cobi to drop. Since January, there have been some about a dozen or so water supply shortfalls, mostly blamed on blackouts in Baungon town where Cobi operates a water treatment facility.

Ladelle Sagrado, spokesperson of the Cagayan de Oro Water District (COWD), said the Cobi supply significantly dropped from 80 million liters a day because of a power failure in Barangay Pualas, Baungon.

As a result, many consumers in the western parts of the city and in Opol town, Misamis Oriental, either lost their water supply or experienced low pressure for hours.

Sagrado said the power supply to the Cobi plant was restored at around 7:30 pm, and it took time for the water pressure to build up. The effects of the blackout on the city’s water supply were felt until yesterday morning.

Sagrado said that since January, power failures affected Cobi operations at least twice a month. But in June, six power outages affected the Cobi operations, she said.

Sagrado said Cobi is planning to put in place its own power generator so that it would not be relying too much on the Misamis Oriental I Rural Electric Service Cooperative for its power needs.

In the meantime, Cobi is looking for an alternative source of power while it awaits the delivery of a power generator which is expected to be shipped from abroad this October, according to Sagrado.
