SOME 60 student-leaders and academics participated in a two-day training on human rights and responsibilities, law and governance, leadership and disaster preparedness organized by alumni of the  US’ International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP) at Xavier University last week.

Participating in the training-workshop, held at the university’s American Corner on Friday and Saturday, were students, school administrators and coordinators of five public schools from public schools in Camaman-an, Gusa, Puerto, Macasandig, and the Cagayan de Oro National High School.

Regional Judge Jerlie Luis Requerme, chairperson of the organizing group Cagayan de Oro-United States Government Bugkos, said the participants came from schools located in flood-prone areas of the city.

“As much as we wanted to accommodate more participants, we could not because of our limited resources,” Requerme told a news conference.

Another IVLP alumna, Judge Ma. Theresa Camannong, said the training-workshop not only aimed at preparing students and academics so they could deal with natural calamities such as flooding but also at equipping them with the knowledge of some laws against abuses.

The group distributed copies of the “Citizen Starter Pack,” an all-in-one primer for empowered citizens.

Tackled during the two-day training included basic human rights, developing disaster-resilient communities, Child Abuse Law, Anti-Bullying Law, civic and responsible leadership, parliamentary procedures, and the use of social media for social good.

The pool of speakers included lawyers Ernesto Neri, Farrah Inihao and Eddie Cuaresma, Judge Eldred Cole,  Engr. Ermin Stan Pimentel, Jason Dalman, Rhobert Maestre, Adam Anay and Anito Librando, academics Merogim Mugot, Maria Angeles Hinosolango, Mercelita Labial, Ezel Lumbatan and Victoria Pulido.

IVLP alumnus Jeoffrey Baconga said the project received support from the US government. (Herbie Gomez)
