THE bulletesistant glass installed around Supt. Michael John Deloso’s Nissan Urvan cushioned the impact of the gun attack carried out by two masked assailants near the capitol on Tuesday morning.

Of the 26 bullets fired, 14 penetrated and hit Deloso who was driving the relatively new van, the Gold Star Daily learned from the hospital and the police.

Deloso has been “responsive” and his vital signs have stabilized so far although he remains under intensive care at the state-owned Northern Mindanao Medical Center which is near the street corner where he was ambushed, according to Supt. Surki Sereñas, spokesman of Camp Alagar.

Sereñas said Deloso sustained a dozen gunshot wounds as a result of the ambush staged by motorcycleiding men in front of a building that used to house courtrooms at around 9:45 am.

But hospital information said Deloso was hit 14 times — 12 in the chest and two more in the face. The deputy chief of Camp Alagar’s Regional Police Strategic Management Unit survived what would have been a fatal attack apparently because his van’s windshield and side windows were made of transparent armor.

Since “bulletproof glass” is not really glass and not really bulletproof and given the quality of the transparent armor installed, some of the bullets still managed to find their way into the van and hit Deloso.

Sereñas said he was told that at least three of Deloso’s vital organs — liver, lungs and intestines — were hit, the reason why the police official is still struggling for life at presstime.

The bullets, according to Sereñas, came from 9mm and caliber .45 pistols.

“Ang daghang igo niya sa iyang right side, nga naigo sa 9mm, apil ang iyang braso, abaga, ug kadtong naka-igo sa iyang tiyan, .45 caliber to siya,” Sereñas said.

At the crime scene, investigators in search for clues found 26 shell casings and deformed bullets from caliber .45 and 9mm pistols. Deloso’s white van was riddled with bullets.

Sereñas said Deloso had his caliber .45 pistol which he was not able to use. “Wala siya makapaboto sa iyang pusil. Ang iyang firearm, na-a ra sa iyang lawas ug naecover man kini sa hospital.”
