“CORY Aquino may be popular. She is popular today. Why? For losing the husband in the hands of Mr. Marcos.”

Did that statement come from a Dilawan? Nope.

It was President Rody Duterte who inadvertently revealed that alleged detail on Ninoy Aquino’s assassination. Should the president now say, Oops?

And, of course, there was Kris Aquino tweeting about the revelation: “Thank you for acknowledging our family’s loss, and who was behind it. Salamat, Mr. President.”

So, the case is closed now, thanks to Duterte?

The Pinoy does wonder why the mastermind behind Ninoy’s assassination has remained as the lead star in a conspiracy theory. It has been almost 36 years since Aug. 21, 1983, it’s about time for Pinas to put closure to the case. But there seems to be no hurry in that department. It wasn’t solved during Tita Cory’s presidency and also during her son PNoy’s term as prez. Perhaps they’re waiting for Kris to become president.

They had their chance right after the 1986 People Power when the Pinoy was still convinced that dictatorship could worsen Pinas’ situation, and democracy was the solution to all its problems. That would have been the best time to discover the truth and nothing but the truth. They had their second chance when Fidel Ramos, one of Edsa’s heroes, became president. And another chance when PNoy was president. Tsk tsk. Hopefully, this won’t regress into wa-chance.

Well, what do we, the madlang pehpohl, know, huh? All we have are conspiracy theories. Chika pa more. But if ever the mastermind will be revealed in the future, that will become a precedent for similar cases, with the possibility of other powerful people finally realizing they can no longer get away with anything.

When the Pinoy is too busy, he has no time to find out who’s the mastermind, and to learn about Pinas’ history and what politicians are doing to that history. For example, the “Magellan” 15-21 term-sharing agreement of incumbent House Speaker Alan Peter Cayetano and future House Speaker Lord Allan Velasco may prompt the clueless Pinoy to ask, Magellan? 15-21? What’s that?

But the Pinoy who’s much aware of Pinas’ history may also ask that same question: Magellan? 15-21? What’s that? As he ponders on the real meaning of term-sharing.

There’s this saying that goes, “Yesterday is history. Tomorrow is a mystery. Today is a gift. That’s why it is called the present.” Which could be Cayetano’s mantra as he savors his 15 months as House Speaker. Yup, carpe diem.

Fifteen months later…

Which in “SpongeBob Squarepants” is, “Sometime later…”

Here’s hoping Cayetano won’t have selective amnesia by then and will remember the agreement unlike the senior citizen who’s struggling with senior-moment challenges—forgets his keys, his cellphone, his eyeglasses, and even the rules on what he can publicly blurt out to the madlang pehpohl. But if his comment has evoked only one response, either it’s common knowledge already or it doesn’t matter anymore.

If there’s one thing that seems to always matter in Pinas, it must be showbiz chismis. Gerald Anderson ghosting Bea Alonzo. John Lloyd Cruz and Ellen Adarna’s rumored breakup. And there’s the avid fan wishing for Popoy (Lloydie) and Basha (Alonzo) to end up with each other already, bringing us back to Basha’s hugot line again: “Sana ako pa rin. Ako na lang. Ako na lang ulit.” I think I wrote in a previous column that this could be Cayetano’s words, too, before giving Velasco the chance to be House Speaker.

But my hugot lines for now come from Sharon Cuneta’s makabagbag damdamin song: “Balutin mo ako ng hiwaga ng iyong pagmamahal / Hayaang matakpan ang kinang na ‘di magtatagal / Mabuti pa kaya’y maging bituing walang ningning / Kung kapalit nito’y walang paglaho mong pagtingin.” Who among Anderson, Alonzo, Lloydie, and Adarna are singing these lyrics to their significant other? Hmmm.

Politicians and political parties also have their share of “bituing walang ningning” moments when they’re no longer in power, thus, the tendency to push for their spouses and children as replacements until the whole family morphs into a political dynasty.

Meanwhile, Davao Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio recently had something to say about the possibility of running for president in 2022: “Everything is easier if it is the plan of God. Before I think about that, I should ask God first if this is for me. So we would not make mistakes, we need to pray for wisdom on how to go about it and how to decide.”
