IN response to the clamor of the constituents of Barangays Indahag, Balubal, Lumbia, Councilor Edgar Cabanlas, chair of the City Council committee on urban and rural poor and housing development, proposed the implementation of the water supply systems in the said barangays.

This, as the committee together with the representatives of Cagayan de Oro Water District (COWD) discussed the proposal including the cost estimate of the project this week.

During the meeting, Cabanlas expressed his intention to fast track the project. He said during the campaign period most of the residents of these barangays were complaining regarding the lack of water supply.

“I started this because as chairman and member of the housing program of the city, ang basic component of the city is water,” he said.

Cabanlas said he also understands the financial capability of COWD. “Dili gyud makaya, galisod kung asa magkuha og funds,” he cited.

Cabanlas assured the COWD of the city’s support regarding financial issues for the proposed project.

“We decided that we will help you finance this project. Purpose is aron kaning mga subdivision sa ibabaw dili sila magsalig sa tubig sa uban LGUs nga toa didto,” he said.

A representative of COWD said the office already brought the concern to the Office of the President last 2017. However, it was referred to the Local Water Utilities Administration and was advised to seek assistance from the Department of the Interior and Local Government and the National Housing Authority.

NHA has a budget for water supply but for NHA housing project only, said the COWD.

The estimated cost of the Balubal water supply project is P160 million, while P111 million for Indahag.

Councilor Cabanlas said he wants this proposal to be included in the budget deliberation this October.

“I hope that later on, when all are in place, with all the improvements, maayo ang atong sistema,” he said.

The committee will meet again next week and invite the management of COWD to further discuss the matter. (sp)
