{"id":101060,"date":"2019-08-17T04:01:40","date_gmt":"2019-08-16T20:01:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mindanaogoldstardaily.com\/?p=101060"},"modified":"2019-08-16T17:34:19","modified_gmt":"2019-08-16T09:34:19","slug":"pilandok-of-the-lake-meets-pilanduk-of-the-sea","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mindanaogoldstardaily.com\/archives\/101060","title":{"rendered":"Pilandok of the Lake meets Pilanduk of the sea"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>By <strong>Mucha Shim Lahaman Quiling<\/strong><br> <em>Mindanews<\/em> .<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>BONGAO,\nTawi-tawi &#8212; The prodigious son of Agosainog, Pilandok, climbs the peak of Bud\nBongao and combs the shores of Simunul island, and there he meets the progeny\nof \u2018Mbo Tuan Anjawtal, the indic venerable ancestor, and \u2018 Mbo Tuan Sheikh\nKarimul Makhdum, the mystic forefather.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pilandok, the lovable half-human half-deer\nhas been the central character of Sining Kambayoka Ensemble\u2019s \u201cMga Kwentong\nMaranaw.\u201d A trickster who outwits the kings and beats all his flamboyant\ncourtiers, Pilandok\u2019s hilarious antics bring to life and turn adventurous the\notherwise mundane and laidback everyday existence of the poor and ordinary\nMranaw peasantry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Among the seafaring people of Sulu,\nPilanduk, takes on a more solemn countenance. Pilanduk, while still maintaining\nthe wit and candor of a humble and adventurous boy, for the Suluk &#8212; both Sama\nand Tausug &#8212; they personify in Pilanduk the pure and innocent ego battling and\nstruggling with the kings and princes of egos who are attached to the false\nsplendors and often excessive ostentations of this world. Pilanduk always uses\nhis heart\u2019 s eyes and comes out triumphant in the end. The unconquerable\ndistant princess that always figures as Pilanduk\u2019s and the king\u2019s object of\ndesire is paradise (jannah) and the eternal abode of peace (akhirat). Unlike\nPilandok\u2019s infinite opportunities and unforeseen adventures, Pilanduk\u2019s destiny\nis certain (yaqin) and his end (qadar) is divinely planned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Mranaw Pilandok has been a transformative\nagent used to comment on social ills, with Pilandok often winning the crown for\nhimself, as social activists project the aspiration of overhauling the social\nsystem and finally achieving progressive social change. The king is deposed by\nPilandok, sometimes with the king\u2019s willing surrender or with Pilandok actually\ndisposing off with the king (e.g. Pilandok Sa Kaharian Sa Ilalim Ng Lawa).\nHence, alluding to tradition sadly bowing out to \u2018progressive\u2019 modernity and\nthe poor boy inheriting all the corruptions of the crown and society. But\nPilandok once again makes the final escape, and disavows the kingly life. And the\ncycle repeats itself where society infinitely struggles in all its\ncontradictions, and endlessly aspiring for utopian dream of a perfect\ndevelopment (i.e. socialism) and man\u2019s ultimate conquest of the world and all\nthat it contains (i.e. capitalist materialism).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To the Ahlus Suluk, Pilanduk and his oddyseys\nare a vehicle of Sufi mystic\u2019 s purificatory process, charting the journeys of\nthe self towards the higher ego and overcoming the lower nafs. Pilanduk\u2019 s\nquests is the ordinary Sama, Tausug, JamaMapun, Kalibugan, and Yakan\u2019 s search\nfor himself (ka-awon) and finding God (Tuhan) in his knowledge of his\nginhawa,badan,jasad, and the various other multiplicities of self. His quest\nends with the knowledge that there is really nothing there but Tuhan! And the\nmore that he thirsts to aspire for ultimate oneness with Tuhan in the path of\nLove, the way of tawhid ( unicity).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The stages towards achieving the spiritual\nunion and the battles of annihilating duality and dividedness thence become the\ngoals of life itself.. The oneway single-tracked journey despite its many\ntravails is all that matters, not the destinations or the end results of\nstruggling that chance upon one\u2019 s travel. Pilanduk\u2019 s wordly adventures are\nthe peeling off of the veils of illusions and pretentions of this temporal and\ntransient life. And as our Mranaw Pilandok wants us to realize, \u201cito\u2019 y kwento\nko, at ito\u2019 y kwento nyo!\u201d, we must see our present realities mirrored in\nthere, and know that these are all illusions, so laugh at it, shun it, if we\ncan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pilanduk of Sulu does not usurp the kingly\nthrone, knowing that it is him in another hat. At the story\u2019s ending, he\nconvinces the royal tyrant and his pompous court to convert and become devout\nbelievers, in as much as one does not consume in order to reproduce the dark\nnor disposes of it (for Allah alone creates and destroys), but through\nalchemical process of Love (i.e. marriage of Pilanduk to the royal daughter),\nthe higher self tames and assimilates the lower self, and deploys its\nweaknesses into highlighting strength and rendering the essential Nur Muhammad\nbrighter than any earthy light. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>(Mucha Shim Lahaman Quiling teaches subjects\nat the departments of Senior High School, Social Sciences and Language at MSU\nTawiTawi College of Arts and Sciences.
