“In shock, we join the cries for justice. Our brother’s blood cries out to the Lord from the ground,” said Xavier president Fr. Roberto Yap in his homily during a mass inside the campus on Friday.

Yap condemned the brutal killing of 23-year-old Xavier University philosophy teacher and law student Gexie Ray Ungab. “This barbaric and savage crime is utterly despicable. The perpetrators of this horrible murder must be brought to justice.”

Fr. Yap said, “We are shocked and outraged at this gruesome murder.”

He added: “In sadness, we turn to the bereaved family of Gexie. We try to comfort them but we have difficulty in finding the right words, we are at a loss as to what to say to them in their pain.

“But if we cannot offer words, then our simple presence to be with them in their time of grief and pray for Gexie’s family who has missed him so much.”

Ungab’s father and other family members came. Under threat, the family decided not to ask authorities for help.

The family decision, hasn’t changed, said Ungab’s father Alexie Jose.

The elder Ungab told reporters after the mass celebrated by Fr. Yap, “Didto na lang mi sa langit mangayog hustisya kay sa langit na-ay hustisya.”

He said he and members of his family were still hurting because of what was done to Gexie Ray but they no longer want any more trouble.

The 23-year-old Ungab went missing in late November. His body was found dumped in Marawi City about a week later. The victim’s lower limbs were riddled with bullets; he was demasculinized; and he was stabbed at least 18 times.
