BUTUAN City – Suspected gang members hacked a driver and his aide from a truck-service company in Cagayan de Oro while they parked on a road here Thursday evening.

Police identified the victims of as 31-year-old truck driver Clifford Semine Tangara of Purok 2, Talisayan, Misamis Oriental; and his 36-year-old aide Jerico del Rosario Gabriel of Tagoloan, Misamis Oriental.

Capt. Emerson Alipit, Butuan police spokesperson, said the victims were inside the truck that was parked along Langihan Road in Purok 3, Barangay San Ignacio at around 10 pm when the attack was carried out.

He said the assailants smashed the truck’s windshield, side mirrors, and other external parts of the primemover truck.

The victims sustained lacerations and hack wounds all over, including the heads, Alipit said.

He said members of the police’s City Mobile Force Company were on patrol in the area at that time, and quickly apprehended two of the suspected assailants.

One is a 17-year-old from Barangay San Ignacio, and another has been identified by the police as Cyril John Tolentino, 23, of Barangay Taguibo, Butuan.  

A witness said the driver and his aide had just come from an eatery for their supper and brought some liquor inside the truck.

He said he saw about 15 to 20 mostly young men carry out the attack.

The minor, who was arrested, said the truck driver and his aide started the fight at a street corner by threatening and cussing at them.

“They started it. They had bladed weapons. We went to the truck and attacked them. They can’t just insult and threaten us,” the minor said.
