The national government is demanding full accountability following the sinking of the M/V Trisha Kerstin 3, one of the deadliest maritime disasters in recent years.
Special Assistant to the President Anton Lagdameo, conveying a message from President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., underscored the urgent need for a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances that led the vessel to capsize off the waters of Basilan on Jan. 26.
Beyond the immediate grief, Lagdameo stressed that authorities must establish the facts surrounding the vessel’s seaworthiness, passenger capacity, and regulatory compliance before it departed Zamboanga City for Jolo, Sulu.
“We owe it to the victims and their families to pursue the truth,” Lagdameo said, adding that accountability is crucial to restoring public confidence in the country’s maritime transport system.
The vessel foundered in the early hours of Jan. 26, throwing hundreds of passengers into the sea.
Under the leadership of the Philippine Coast Guard, with the help of local government units and volunteers, responders have so far recovered 40 bodies, while more than 100 survivors were rescued.
Lagdameo reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to those affected by the tragedy.
“We stand in solidarity with the grieving families,” he said.
“The government is ready to extend all possible assistance and comfort during this difficult time.”
President Marcos has directed all concerned agencies to ensure the immediate delivery of aid to survivors and bereaved families.
Looking ahead, the Palace is calling for a thorough review of maritime safety protocols.
Lagdameo said the government will work closely with regulators to ensure the tragedy leads to concrete reforms and stricter enforcement, aimed at safeguarding the traveling public.
