Churchill Aguilar WHETHER Duterte has a chance of winning or not, he still is the best possible president our country needs right now. The rest of the “presidentiables” don’t seem to have backbones when it comes to crucial issues. We have seen how Roxas became partisan at the height of the typhoon aftermath in Visayas after pointing out that a Romualdo is not an Aquino. We have heard Poe playing safe in her stand with a religious sect when the latter made a mass rally in Edsa perhaps in an attempt of winning the group’s loyalty. We have also heard how Binay allegedly overpriced almost all of his projects in Makati and built cronies to hide his unexplained wealth. But for Duterte, we only heard how uncompromising he is in dealing with crooks to the point of being sued for human rights violation. If we look closer to the public values they have made, other than Duterte, the rest were traditional politicians who would do anything to win. Duterte on the other hand would do anything to solve a problem whether or not he gets a re-election. If we look at the results of their efforts, Poe does not have much to boast as she is a newbie in politics. In her three years as a law maker, I am yet to know a game-changing law that she authors. Binay may have showed the development of Makati City, but analysts would refute that Makati will always be Makati with or without Binay since it has always been the banking capital of our country. It is however obvious on how he got so rich during his administration. Roxas on the other hand was not even an outstanding DILG secretary, he was not even half as good as his predecessor, Jess Robredo. Had it not been for a failed and poorly organized quick response of the DILG on typhoon Yolanda, he would not have been pushed to be on his toes to improve the disaster management system in our LGUs. But again for Duterte, at the height of unrest in Mindanao and in the midst of the arms conflict between the government and a lot of separatists at the different parts of Mindanao, Duterte singlehandedly established Davao as one of the safest cities in the world. History defines him as the man who makes things happen. And while all presidentiables were too busy trying to win votes, he is trying to solve the kidnapping case that recently took place allegedly involving the Abu Sayyaf. At the height of the political circus going on as the filing of candidacy is fast approaching, and with the gimiks and propaganda that each politician implores, the glaring truth of who is sincere or not, is as clear as the sunny day. Duterte remains to be the best option there is. He needs to know that and the people needs to know that as well. Because if Duterte would not run or would not win, then we just have to brace ourselves with another 6 years of mediocrity.
