YOU’RE now a “hilaw” JaDine fan.

Unlike that stalker who follows them everywhere, you don’t even watch OTWOL, you don’t hoard the magazines where they’re on the cover, don’t watch their concerts, don’t follow them on Twitter and Instagram, don’t “heart” their Facebook posts–“thumbs up” only, thank you–and you’re not going to start a nuclear war despite the bashing that Nadine gets from the fans of Maine and Kathryn.

If you have no idea who Maine and Kathryn are… Oh, well.

But you’re now a JaDine fan. Hilaw nga lang. But still a fan. You realized this after watching Nadine’s YouTube video where she and James look so cute and sweet, inspiring you to say, Sigh. Wish mo lang. Hanggang wish na lang. You can’t have that anymore. With your senior moment, gray hair, wrinkles, sagging skin, and injured left knee–plyo pa more!–nope, the vid won’t look the same. You’ll be limping your way through that snow, on that street, on the ice, on the rock, you turn around to look at your James and the camera that he’s aiming at you, and… Oops! The knee! No. De. Fi. Nite. Ly. Not. The. Same.

There was a time when you had that, whatever James and Nadine have now. But at your age, talking about time brings you back to a long, long time ago, once upon a time, when David Bowie and Alan Rickman and Glenn Frey were young and alive. They’re all dead now, one after the other, along with Celine Dion’s husband and her brother who died two days later.

Harvest time. Look at their ages–late 50s to early 70s–and realize, oh my, that’s young. The oldest man in the world recently died at the age of 112. Half of that is 56. If that’s your age now, you can be looking forward to 56 more years of living in this oh so exciting world of love teams, “Star Wars” prequels and sequels, and an AI which Mark Zuckerberg has chosen as his “personal challenge for 2016”: “to build a simple AI to run my home and help me with my work.” He describes it as “kind of like Jarvis in Iron Man.”

Now you know what rich people consider as a “personal challenge.” Gosh, it’s not even their professional challenge. Building a business empire is no big deal to them anymore–been there, done that, ho-hum. Thus, they aim for the seemingly impossible: R2-D2 butlers.

It took the iPhone less than a decade to change the way people communicate with each other. Its 1st gen was released in 2007, and each year thereafter, Apple fans would line up again and again for hours to buy its upgraded phones, with the iPhone 6S and 6S Plus as the ninth and latest version released last year. The phone that can do almost everything, except butler duties.

These are indeed exciting times. For the young. From birth to their 30s, they’ll be dazzled by gadgets, cheap travel, and JaDines that love-team factories tend to churn out like banana cues, maruya, fish balls, kwek kwek, balut, taho, and your most favorite peanuts. Your generation had Dondon Nakar and Winnie Santos. At least you didn’t have the older generation’s Guy and Pip. There’s always a swooning market for love–or love pretenders if you don’t believe any of the sh*t that love-team handlers post on social media.

And these are interesting times. For the young at heart. As they deal with senior-moment woes, prescription meds, and dryness–skin, hair, down there. If you were insecure while young, you’ll be more insecure when the active life is threatening to vanish fast. Add the fading relevance to that and there it is: the recipe for disaster. That’s why it’s wise to be kind and understanding to, uh, old people because if you’re lucky enough to reach that age, you may need kindness and understanding, too.

For now, James and Nadine are young and so full of life as they navigate their way through the rigors of improving their popularity and relevance in the fickle world of show business. They have to be unique so you can touch the widening gap between them and the rest of the street foods flying out of love-team factories, with JaDine of course on top of the heap while the rest of ’em are reduced to catching leftover crumbs with the tips of tongues hanging out from envious mouths.

There’s indeed a brighter future for JaDine. They’re now being touted as the younger version of John Lloyd Cruz and Bea Alonzo. Yes, it has come to this: Cruz and Alonzo now have younger versions. Nora Aunor and Tirso Cruz III aka Guy and Pip, and their rivals Edgar Mortiz and Vilma Santos have remained relevant in Pinoy showbiz so there’s hope for the JaDines, Lloydies, Beas.

The brewing chika is this: Lloydie and Bea finally falling in love with each other after years of maintaining a professional relationship, an emotional distance which has been touted as the secret to their love team’s success. Will this rumored metamorphosis from professional to romantic affect that success? But life is short and love is rare so bahala na si Batman with that success which can be fleeting anyway especially in showbiz.

JaDine is on the cover of the February 2016 edition of Yes! And you’re among those excitedly waiting for the chance to grab a copy. Or copies that you can give to fellow JaDine fans. Magazines with them or at least one of them on the cover are reportedly flying off the shelves at a speed way faster than that of AlDub and KathNiel. Oh. What happened? That could be the question running through the veins of AlDub and KathNiel fans. There was a time when KathNiel was the love team to aspire for. Then came AlDub. And now, here’s JaDine. Fleeting.

But AlDub and KathNiel fans will of course say it’s their idols’ magazines that are selling at a speed faster than that of Japan’s bullet trains. Well, the hilaw JaDine fan is better off feasting on one more street food: manggang hilaw with bagoong. All that sourness and saltiness–brrrrr, but yum!
