GYMING on November 1 and 2 is standard operating procedure for the gym rat who may also go to the gym on Good Friday, Easter Sunday, Christmas Day, and New Year’s Day. It’s not because he doesn’t have a life. It’s because his day is not complete without a workout.
I guess I’m not a gym rat yet since I even take Saturdays off from gym so I can have my weekly Artist’s Date on that day, and I can stay home on Sundays.
The Artist’s Date is Julia Cameron’s prescription for curing writer’s block. That’s when I should be alone while discovering the world outside. That is, if watching movies helps me discover the outside world. Haha. If not for the Artist’s Date, I’ll be constantly facing a blank page.
So, what has been the result of my latest Artist’s Date? Oh. I watched “Roofman” which is about a thief who enters his potential sources of funds through the building’s roof.
Now, there’s the House of Representathieves, er, Representatives which has hearings on alleged thieves who may be government officials and government contractors. The Roofman’s funds are pittance compared to the funds that government thieves can allegedly amass, but it’s the Roofman who ends up in jail.
There are many other kinds of thieves. Thieves who steal your future. Thieves who steal ideas. Thieves who steal your heart. Hmmm.
But what will matter is still your reaction to the thieving. Much like your reaction to everything else that happens. The harm has been done, don’t cry over spilled milk, this too shall pass, and all that jazz.
Life can be unfair but dwelling on that fact, er, perspective will only derail your efforts to move forward.
An ordinary mortal’s moving forward, though, is not as easy as the way government officials and government contractors avoid jail time. You have to go through a long process of healing before truly moving forward.
The healing journey may include eating kakanin on All Saints’ and All Souls’ Days. Oops. No.
The healing journey may include discovering what you need.
There’s a huge difference between what you need and what you want. For example, I want piggies, but I need pork.
And there I was on Friday, buying a huge pink piggy bank. Unlike government officials and government contractors who allegedly have bank vaults in their mansions, I now have a piggy bank which I won’t even use as a piggy bank but as decor.
This piggy is the biggest so far in my collection. There was that humongous piggy that I saw in Manila years ago. It could have been floor decor but I was already overthinking about reminding the househelp and guests to be careful with it. To avoid complicating crib protocols, I decided not to buy it. Besides, I didn’t want the house to end up looking like a house of piggies especially since I was still fat then.
My most treasured piggy, though, is the one that resembles the cutest pink piggy that Facebook has for its comments section. It’s a gift from a friend whose father expertly sculpted it out of clay. Made in Bulua, Cagayan de Oro. And I’ve been forever grateful. Thanks so much, Sir Nestor Sr. and Nestor Jr. Bolit Banuag.
