By LITO RULONA Correspondent THE Bureau of Customs (BOC) confiscated over P24 million worth of cigarettes from at least three warehouses on Capt. Vicente Roa Street, this city, on Tuesday evening. BOC inspector Junel Pugoy said authorities arrested three Taiwanese suspected to have smuggled in the cigarettes. The BOC is coordinating with the Bureau of Immigration in an effort to ascertain their true names. Pugoy said the seized items were fake Phillip Morris cigarettes. One of the Taiwanese, identified only as “Mr. Chan,” failed to show documents from the immigration bureau. Pugoy said the customs bureau is trying to find out if the owner of 5K warehouse if he knew that smuggled items were being stocked in the establishment. Sonny Sarmiento, technical assistant of the BOC commissioner, said they were completing the inventory and would press charges against the Taiwanese. “We established the presence of counterfeit products after a test-buy that we made,” he said. “We will file appropriate cases once we have established the merits of the case.” Sarmiento said they would also give samples of the seized items to Phillip Morris Philippines Inc. so they could examine the smuggled cigarettes.
