CORRALES Associate Editor RESULTS of the mock elections at the Jesuitun Xavier University (XU) and the state-owned Mindanao University of Science of Technology (Must) were consistent on five things: Davao Mayor Rodrigo Duterte is the favorite presidential candidate; Sen. Ferdinand Marcos Jr. is the second most favored bet for the vice presidency; ex-senator Juan Miguel Zubiri is the favorite candidate for senator; former mayor Vicente Emano is the poor third among the city’s mayoral candidates; and Rep. Rolando Uy’s son is the least favorite bet for vice mayor. Duterte, who topped in Xavier’s Feb. 19-20 mock polls with 65.13 percent, repeated the feat at Must last weekend--he topped in the state university’s mock polls, garnering 76.92 percent of online votes, and 72.4 percent in the manual voting. Must said over a thousand students participated and cast their votes. Of the participants, 389 or 34.86 percent turned out to be nonegistered voters. The results of the online polls show Sen. Miriam Defensor-Santiago at second place with 10.9 percent, followed by Sen. Grace Poe with 8.97 percent, former Interior secretary Manuel Roxas II with 2.56 percent, and Vice President Jejomar Binay with 0.64 percent. In the manual elections, Duterte topped with 808 votes (72.4 percent), followed by Poe with 147 votes (13.1 percent), Santiago with 71 votes (6.36 percent), Roxas with 52 votes (4.6 percent), and Binay with 23 votes (2.06 percent). For vice president, Duterte’s running mate Alan Peter Cayetano was on top with 45.75 percent. Sen. Marcos ranked second at 21.57 percent, consistent with the results of the Xavier mock polls that also showed him as the second most favored candidate for vice president. Rep. Ma. Leonor Robredo followed with 18.3 percent, Sen. Francis Escudero with 7.84 percent, Sen. Antonio Trillanes IV with 6.54 percent, and Sen. Gregorio Honasan with no vote. Must’s top 12 candidates for the Senate showed Zubiri on top just like in the Xavier mock polls, former Justice Secretary Leila de Lima, Sen. Franklin Drilon, former senator Panfilo Lacson, former congresswoman Risa Hontiveros, former senator Richard Gordon, former senator Francis Pangilinan, former senator Ralph Recto, Sen. Vicente Sotto, Sen. Sergio Osmena III, Sherwin Gatchalian, and Sen. Teofisto Guingona III. The outcome of the Must mock polls was also consistent with the results of Xavier’s mock elections that showed former mayor Emano as a poor third among the mayoral candidates. In the Xavier mock polls, Emano had 10.85 percent of the votes, and in the Must polls, he had 16.1 percent. But unlike the results of Xavier’s mock polls, Rep. Rufus Rodriguez of the city’s 2nd District emerged as Must’s favorite mayoral candidate--he bagged 565 votes or 50.62 percent in the manual mock elections, beating reelectionist mayor Oscar Moreno who garnered 307 votes of 27.5 percent. Emano bagged 180 votes or 16.1 percent. Behind him were mayoral candidates Felix Borres Jr. with 0.15 percent, and Romer Cabildo and Ric Saarenas with 0.8 percent. In the online polls, Rodriguez overwhelmingly won with 94.4 percent while Moreno garnered only 3.91 percent. Rodriguez’s running mate, Councilor Roger Abaday, also emerged as Must’s favorite candidate for vice mayor with 440 votes or 39.4 percent, followed by reelectionist Vice Mayor Acenas who bagged 360 votes or 32.2 percent, and then Joaquin Uy with 242 votes or 21.6 percent. Acenas topped while Uy was also poor third in the Xavier mock polls. Over local radio, Rodriguez thanked students of Must. “Dako atong kumpyansa sa kabatan-onan sa Must.” Moreno, for his part, called it a “desperate” move. “Fake man naang sa Must. They came out with another similar activity. That is not true. An attempt to manipulate things. Ingon ana sila ka desperado.”
