By LITO RULONA Correspondent THE Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) yesterday renewed its commitment to the peace process despite Congress’ failure to pass the proposed law that would have established a Bangsamoro territory in Mindanao in place of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (Armm). Mohagher Iqbal, chair of the MILF peace panel, gave up hopes that Congress would be able pass the proposed law but assured that the Front would continue to seek peace. He said the MILF would not resort back to armed struggle considering its gains. “There is life even after non-passage of BBL. It’s like death--it’s difficult to accept, but we no choice but to accept the fact that Congress has failed to approve it,” Iqbal told radio station DxCC. Iqbal said he was still “tempted to believe that Congress has the collective wisdom to pass a good BBL” but understands that the efforts have been “hijacked by delays and lack of quorum.” He however said that the MILF would assert that the government is obliged to make sure that a Bangsamoro law, based on their agreement, would be passed. The challenge, according to Iqbal, would be on how to translate the political documents into legal documents. “That is an obligation of the government,” Iqbal said. Iqbal said the MILF acknowledges the Aquino administration’s commitment to the peace process despite Congress’ failure to approve the proposed law. The MILF, he said, has been preparing to carry out a “democratic struggle” even as it hopes that the next Congress would pass the BBL. “It is a continuing obligation on the part of the government that it should enact a law... We have been negotiating with the government since 1997. Our partner is the government of this country, not just the executive branch of the government,” Iqbal said. Iqbal also assured that the MILF has already abandoned its quest for an independent state, calling it an old cliché.
