CAGAYAN de Oro City — About eight tons of garbage were removed from portions of the Lapasan Coastal Road during a large-scale cleanup on Saturday, Sept. 19, highlighting the continuing challenge of keeping the city’s coastline free of waste.
More than 1,800 participants from government agencies, civic organizations, schools and volunteer groups joined the cleanup, which was conducted in partnership with the City Local Environment and Natural Resources Office (CLENRO).
Among those who participated were the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), Girl Scouts of the Philippines, SM CDO Downtown and SM City CDO Uptown.
Carlston Maglangit, public relations manager of SM Downtown Cagayan de Oro, said the activity aimed to help keep coastal areas clean while promoting proper waste management.
Volunteers collected garbage along portions of the coastal road, with the total waste gathered estimated at about eight tons.
Maglangit said the activity brought together government personnel, community organizations and volunteers to address waste accumulation along the coastline.
The cleanup also underscored the need for proper waste disposal and sustained community participation to prevent garbage from reaching nearby marine waters.
