CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY — Demonstrating endurance and race execution, 8-year-old Cagayan de Oro swimmer Carl Fredrick Quizon powered through the pool to clinch the Most Outstanding Swimmer (MOS) title at the Diyandi Festival Swimming Competition held here recently.
Representing team E-Warriors, Quizon delivered a dominant performance over two days of competition, harvesting six gold medals and one silver medal. His standout campaign followed a strong stint in Cebu, cementing his consistency in regional age-group swimming.
"I am very satisfied with Carl's performance these past two days," Coach Erickson Jadap said. "Coming from the Cebu competition, he was able to maintain his performance and even improve in some events. The six golds, one silver, and Most Outstanding Swimmer award is a good result, but more importantly, we saw his improvement, consistency, and confidence as a young swimmer."
Jadap stressed that their training extended beyond mere podium finishes, emphasizing athlete development and discipline.
"Our main goal was not only to win medals, but also to improve their times, gain experience, and build confidence," Jadap added. "It is also important that they learn discipline and good sportsmanship while representing E-Warriors."
The competitive climax arrived during the final leg of the 100-meter butterfly, where Quizon faced a tight battle for overall points needed to secure the top individual honor.
"I was excited and nervous because my opponent and I were tied," Quizon recalled. "I knew that if I wanted to win MOS, I had to win the 100M Butterfly. I was already tired, but I told myself to keep going and finish strong. I gave everything I had, and when I touched the wall, I was so happy because I did it!"
Upon touching the wall, Quizon secured a decisive lead of over 10 meters against his rival to capture the victory. "I was very happy and surprised! I thought, 'Wow, I won MOS again!'" he said.
The athlete's mother, Rechelyn Quizon, shared the emotional journey behind her son's achievements on the poolside.
"As a mom, I felt very emotional and proud when Carl was announced as the Most Outstanding Swimmer," she said. "All the hard work, sacrifices, and early mornings finally felt so worth it. But more than the trophy and medals, I’m proud of the discipline and determination he showed in every race."
Held in line with Iligan City’s annual Diyandi Festival under the theme "One Culture. One Heritage. One Celebration," the sports tournament brought together young athletes from across Mindanao and Visayas to foster camaraderie and sportsmanship.
"It means a lot to me because I get to meet other swimmers and make new friends," Quizon said. "I’m happy to be part of this celebration and to share my love for swimming with everyone."
