Ben Contreras IT must have been more than a month since I posted my daughter’s intention to donate her nursing course books, etc.. Until today, there has been no taker. Perhaps, it’s been taken as a hoax or people didn’t think that we’re serious. I don’t want to think that they have become obsolete. Books like those do not change that fast. They must still be relevant and of value. To our readers, if you happen to know anyone who may be in need of these books, feel free to communicate with me. This is my cellphone number: 0917 7121 261.
In every basket of apples, there will always be rotten ones. Whether it’s national or local, people will be more discerning. Well, I really hope so. Why, because people have been talking about the movie “Heneral Luna.” Frankly, I am also intrigued. In our fellowship, the Mag7, my igsu Nono Montalvan talked so much about the movie, short of saying, “You’ve got to watch it.”. I haven’t watched local movies for decades not because I discriminate against them. It was simply because, at one point, local movies deteriorated to the level of mediocrity. Pretty girls, who show a little of their flesh, became actresses, and dialogues bordered on vulgarity. But I believe Nono, especially so when he said the players are not the usual movie characters. There are said to be good lessons to be learned––historical, moral, and political. In fact, students have been encouraged to watch it if only to learn a bit of our history, and to open their eyes to the past and comparing the past to the present. The family who bankrolled this film voluntarily may have their reasons for doing it but they never expected that it would be a great success, and even hit the P200-million mark. The temptation to produce more seems to be in the offing. If indeed the movie has been presented to vie for an international award like “Best Foreign Movie,” then we, Filipinos, should be proud of it. Is the plot relevant in our time? Nono says so. Hence, for those who haven’t seen it, this is your moment of truth. I will. Back to the apples, it is hoped that this movie will teach us to be more discerning in choosing our government officials, national and local. I’ll keep you posted.
As I write this, a friend would turn 60. The family is going to throw a surprise party for her. The last time I threw a surprise party for my wife, she cried. The crowd was small but the preparation was tough because I had to tell a lot of lies about things. But that was part of the surprise. I could see the same for this family. Anyway, “happy birthday” to my Mare Bebie. God bless you always. And if you feel like crying, just do it!
