CAGAYAN de Oro City — Student journalists from San Vicente Elementary School in Butuan City brought home 13 awards in 14 contested events at the Southwest District Schools Press Conference (DSPC) on Aug. 14, with five pupils advancing to the division-level competition.
The school’s top finishers were Jenzel Aquino, champion in Filipino Sports Writing, and Nathalie Amante, champion in Filipino Feature Writing.
Joining them at the Division Press Conference are second-place finishers Karmela F. Ligtas in English Column Writing, Alexha Bhianna B. Hermosada in Filipino Column Writing, and Bianca Audrey Ferrer in English Science and Technology Writing.
Other San Vicente ES winners included Haven Mariah Petogo, third in Filipino Editorial Writing; Jehan S. Cañete, third in Filipino Editorial Cartooning; and John Michael Aquino, third in English Feature Writing.
Fourth-place finishers were Hillary Peliyo in English Editorial Writing, Jhon Syrelle M. Chavez in Filipino News Writing, Catherine Alexa R. Salmoro in English News Writing, Janelle C. Simbajon in English Sports Writing, and Kristel Angel P. Duarte in Filipino Science and Technology Writing.
Samaria Nerees Dumaplin also represented the school in English Editorial Cartooning.
The pupils were trained by school paper advisers and coaches Brenda B. Ulay, Arcile S. Balinas, Jeralyn M. Cabasag and Meryll Christine E. Pelayo.
The advisers credited the pupils’ achievement to their hard work and the continued support of teachers, parents and coaches.
With five pupils qualifying for the next level, the young journalists are now preparing to compete against other student writers at the division press conference.
