WHENEVER a low-carber sneezes, the response is, Carbs pa more, instead of, Bless you.

The side effects of high-carb goodies are more obvious once you’re a low-carber. But will these stop you from having sweets? Hmmm. Let’s sing na lang oi: “I don’t know, but it’s been said/Decisions travel far from heart to head/Maybe, maybe.” That’s A-ha’s “Maybe, Maybe,” by the way.

I get allergies, brain fog, knee pain, etc. the morning after a high-carb feast. Whenever these discourage people from trying the low-carb diet, my thought bubble then goes, Yeah, they’re better off with high-carb. To each his own.

Only those already on low-carb could relate with what happens to me when I deviate from the diet.

I went into the low-carb diet not to lose weight but to lower my blood pressure. The weight loss is simply a bonus. This is an ongoing journey otherwise my blood pressure would shoot up again. I still have a long way to go as I struggle with cravings for high-carb goodies.

I’ve been vowing to stop talking and writing about the diet for so long now, but since I want my family and friends to also experience the joy of having less maintenance medications, I couldn’t help but continue discussing about it. But I promise this is the last time. I’ll shut up after this column: no more talks and columns about low-carb. Hush. Politics and religion are safer topics. Haha.

So, let’s talk about politics and religion. With the barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections coming soon to a voting precinct near you, the wannabes are now praying for a miracle as they start introducing themselves to potential voters. This reminds me of another A-ha song: “You can start, but you cannot stop/You give in, but you can’t give up/You can tell all your desperate jokes/To a world that puts/Love on hold/Cry wolf/Time to worry/Cry wolf/Time to worry now.”

Or this: “We’re talking away/I don’t know what I’m to say/I’ll say it anyway/Today is another day to find you/Shyin’ away/Oh, I’ll be comin’ for your love, okay/Take on me/(Take on me).”

Or this: “Though I know I’ll be hunting high and low…high…/There’s no end to the lengths I’ll go to.”

Or this: “And you are the one/Now the state I’m in!/Catching you was so hard/I fought for you/Did you let me win?/You don’t even care/You don’t care where I’ve been/But I do love you/Any way you want me to.”

See? Any song can be a campaign song!

And once the political candidate loses, he may sing, “So, please now/Talk to me/Tell me things I could find helpful/For how can I stop now/Is there nothing I can do/I have lost my way/I’ve been losing you.”

A-ha became popular in the mid-80s when the young once were still the young ones. The good old days were not necessarily better days. People were then busy looking for their first million, a goal difficult to achieve as money arrived and left like a tourist who was always rushing from one tourist spot to the next.

Now that they’re the young once, their goals have changed from earning millions to having happy thoughts. Because they now know what truly matters.
