Ariel Paderan, media relations officer of the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (Caap) at the Laguindingan Airport,  said the Zimbabwean dollars were discovered by the Aviation Security Unit led by Col. Raniel Balones at the cargo terminal at around 4:50 am.

Paderan said identified the consignee as Leo Mansubay whose address is still unknown to authorities.

“Wala paman gud na siya moanhi dinhi sa airport,” Paderan said.

He said authorities raised questions because the contents of the aluminum boxes were declared as waste materials, and then they discovered bundles of Zimbabwean dollars inside.

Paderan said the boxes and their contents were being held by the airport police.

Zimbabwean dollars however no longer have value. After years of hyperinflation, Zimbabwe was forced to legalize the use of foreign currencies in 2009, resulting in a sharp drop in the use of the Zimbabwean dollar; even its highest denomination became worthless. The Zimbabwean dollar was formally demonetized in 2015.
