CAGAYAN de Oro City, also known as the City of Golden Friendship, has achieved a significant milestone by securing the top spot in the Resiliency pillar of the Cities & Municipalities Competitiveness Index 2024.

In a post, City Mayor's Office Chief of Staff Sheila Lumbatan said this achievement was announced during the awarding ceremony on Friday, August 23, 2024.

Lumbatan noted that last year, the city was ranked second in this category.

"The city's leap to the top position highlights its continuous efforts to improve and adapt across various sectors," said Lumbatan.

Earlier this year, Mayor Rolando “Klarex” Uy emphasized the city’s growth and resilience during his second State of the City Address at the Aquilino Pimentel Jr. International Convention Center.

In his address, Mayor Uy spoke about the city’s progress in areas such as education, health, and social services.

He credited sound fiscal policies and effective government service delivery for the impressive results.

Cagayan de Oro City was also awarded its first-ever Seal of Good Local Governance (SGLG) in 2023, marking a year of achievements.

The mayor addressed both the public and the City Council in a special session, underlining his administration’s focus on family-centered economic development.

This approach is part of the RISE framework, which aims to guide the city towards sustainable growth.

Mayor Uy highlighted that the SGLG award reflects the transparent and sincere governance at City Hall, which has been crucial in the city’s recovery journey.

“We started our journey with the challenge of recovering from the effects of the pandemic,” said Mayor Uy.

He emphasized the city’s determination to stand strong and move forward. “We challenged CDO to RISE,” he declared, motivating all attendees at the convention center.

The mayor recalled the difficult times when the city’s economy was weak, and many families were struggling with poverty.

Despite these challenges, the city government’s efforts have been recognized, and the people’s resilience celebrated.

Cagayan de Oro’s achievement in the Resiliency pillar is a testament to the hard work and dedication of its leaders and citizens, according to Lumbatan.

She stressed that it serves as an inspiration for other cities aiming to improve their competitiveness and resilience.

"As Cagayan de Oro continues to build on its successes, Mayor Klarex remains committed to fostering an environment of growth and opportunity for all residents," said Lumbatan, adding that the city’s journey towards a better future looks promising with these solid foundations in place.
