Midy Daig and the long path to healing after Sendong: A widow’s candle
CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY — Fourteen years have passed since the catastrophic flash floods of Tropical Storm Sendong, yet for survivors like 64-year-old Midy Daig, the memories remain as vivid as the names etched on the Sendong Memorial Wall. Gathering at Gaston Park on Wednesday, Daig honored her husband, Clyde Eddie Daig, one of the 400 residents still declared missing after the 17-foot wall of water decimated Sitio Cala-cala in Barangay Macasandig. While the city’s younger generation knows the tragedy only through stories, local artist Nic Aca continues to use performance art to ensure the 2011 disaster is never forgotten. "It does not mean that if we have to move on we should forget," Aca remarked, standing before a community that still bears the emotional scars of a night that changed Northern Mindanao forever.
