THE birthday lunch had sparkle as its theme. For the fellowship dinner on the same day, it was casual black-and-white.

The next event is requesting for barong. And someone suggested superheroes for another birthday party.

Theme parties make life more exciting if I happen to not have the attire that they require. I do have a barong but it has been posted on Facebook for far too many times already, will I again wear it for the nth time? And the answer to that is a big yes.

There was this wedding where I thought I would only be a guest. It was only when I arrived at the church venue that I realized I was going to be a proxy ninang. In my cocktail dress. The bride assured me later that she didn’t want to pressure her ninongs and ninangs, anyway, so it was all good.

And then my one and only beige heels went pfft at the reception. At first it was only the strap that went pfft. So, I went barefoot while waiting for my beige flats for which I asked someone to send to the reception ASAP.

Barefoot while having a group picture with the bride and groom at the reception venue’s stage. A staff of the wedding coordinator noticed, and I simply answered, Nadaot akong sapatos.

I tried to hide behind the couch where the bride and groom were seated, but when I checked out the photos, my bare feet were still visible.

I had already noticed the Oreo crumbs on the floor, and even mentally complained about them: Who had Oreos and forgot to remove the crumbs below this chair?

It was only when the flats finally arrived and I was now putting the beige heels in the eco bag that I noticed the heels’ black soles were gone. Therefore, those “crumbs” were not Oreos. Haha!

The beige heels were inside the closet since the pandemic lockdowns. It was only at the wedding that I wore them again.

If coming out of the closet is difficult for some people, a pair of heels coming out of the closet after a long hibernation could be difficult, too. It may disintegrate—straps snapping off, soles leaving black crumbs along the way. I was still lucky that the heels didn’t start to misbehave while I was marching down the aisle at the wedding.

As for the superheroes party, will I be Wonder Woman? Since I always wonder where I left my eyeglasses and that’s while I’m actually wearing them but I’ve forgotten I’m already wearing them. That’s why I don’t use a lock for the gym locker, afraid of forgetting the key or the code to unlock it.

Will I be Captain Marvel? Since I think I now have the appropriate body shape. Ahem. Puera buyag.

Someone suggested Catwoman but she’s a supervillain, an antiheroine, not a superhero.

But I’ve been considering Darna since all I’ll need for that is Ding, and for me to say, “Ding, ang bato!”
