Aguirre, Digos City Bureau Chief DIGOS City — The Philippine Rural Development Project through the Department of Agriculture is set to give a ‘green light’ for the construction of a 14-kilometer farm-to-market road in Magsaysay, Davao del Sur. Mayor Arthur Davin said the groundbreaking is set on Feb. 28 and the construction could be through in just 12 months. Engineer Ricardo Oñate, DA Regional executive director will be the keynote speaker during the ground breaking rites. Some officials from the agriculture department will be joining him. It will be a concrete road stretching from Barangay Barayong to Barangay Mabini, then Barangay Bala proper to Upper Bala that would cost P140 million where 10 percent of the total allocation will be shouldered by the local government. This incoming road concreting project will answer the woes of farmers in the far-flung communities of Magsaysay town who are having a hard time transporting their fruits, vegetables and other agricultural products due to unstable road conditions at this point in time. “The smoother the road, the faster their products to reach the market where they can command a higher price since it’s still fresh from the farm,” Davin said. Magsaysay town submitted the project proposal to PRDP two years, ago. But stringent policies and requirement caused the delay of its immediate approval. PRDP is a six-year project designed to establish the government platform for a modern, climate-smart and market-oriented agri-fishery sector.
