BY Saturday, I’ve had enough of salmon. Before that, I had enough of pompano and bangus belly. These three became my fish choices as a carnivore. But supermarkets had run out of stock by the time my supply was dwindling, with salmon as the only one left in the freezer.

And then Holy Week arrived and I panicked with the possibility of having salmon daily for the whole week. This forced me to buy fish at Cagayan de Oro’s Cogon Market, which is actually the better source for fresh catch compared to the supermarket’s presumably farmed salmon, pompano, and bangus belly.

Are fasting and abstinence during Lent still a must for Catholics? Is it time to look for other forms of sacrifice instead? How about refraining from using Facebook? Obviously, the latter was — and still is — impossible, so, let’s opt for no-red-meat then.

I think I’m now allergic to chicken and eggs. So, no-red-meat means fish. Shrimps, crabs, and shellfish would have been the alternatives but they’re kind of complicated to cook because I tend to prefer adding coconut milk to these seafood items. My current ingredient for any recipe is salt. Plus coconut aminos and apple cider vinegar for adobo or humba. Soy may cause inflammation, thus, no soy sauce.

Adopting the low-carb diet may lead to the carnivore diet once you notice that your body is still reacting to some low-carb ingredients. Carnivore is the more strict practice, with the lion diet as the strictest. Lion as in beef, salt, and water only. And I can see the wisdom behind that because beef is indeed the yummiest compared to other meat sources.

Good thing the neighbor who loves to send binignit was out of town otherwise I would have been tempted to have that on Good Friday. Still, I’m craving for Fat Chef’s bilo-bilo and Jacks Halo Halo’s taro-ube overload. They’re practically the same, the only difference is one is hot, the other is icy. Their ingredients’ diversity must be the culprit behind the cravings. Dive in there and whatever you find is always a pleasant surprise.

As to why I’m still craving for carbs is evidence that my carnivore practice has not been as strict as it should be. Ah, hello, Big Bite.

Big Bite Northern Mindanao Food Festival was held at CDO’s Centrio Mall on March 28 to April 6 featuring the region’s restos, cafes, caterers, bakeries, and other food vendors.

But after behaving in the carnivore department for two weeks now, I don’t think I still want to return to dealing with the carbs’ side effects again which I immediately notice upon waking up in the morning when I look in the mirror and see my puffy face. I even had selfies where my right eye was more chinita than the left. “If a picture paints a thousand words,” as the “If” song goes.

Pictures do paint a thousands words. I can already pinpoint when my diet was high-carb or carnivore based on my selfies.

Whenever I see anyone’s puffy face now, my thought bubble always goes, Uh-oh. But who am I to give unsolicited advice? I now have to bite my tongue each time I’m tempted to share the benefits of the carnivore diet.

The best diet is still the one that you can stick with forevermore. To each his own. It’s only when you do the elimination diet that you’ll notice the difference. And only your deep why can convince you to try the elimination diet.

Elimination as in removing food items from the diet to find the best for your health.
