TAYLOR Lautner Kalokalike Cristopher Diwata is now an endorser for skin care, canned mushrooms, a hotel, a barbershop, sardines, fruit juice, a surveying company, a seafood resto, chicken barbecue, taho, soy sauce, a sneakers store, bleach, banana catsup, etc. He’s here, there, and everywhere, complete with billboards and posters. I won’t be surprised if he will end up as an actor in Coco Martin’s TV series “FPJ’s Barangay Quiapo.”

He did guest on “Mga Batang Riles” as Shacob, which I’m sure is a play on Jacob which was Lautner’s role in “Twilight.”

Incidentally, the “Twilight” that has been staying in my minute brain is The Manhattan Transfer’s “Twilight Zone/Twilight Tone”: “When I hear this melody/This strange illusion takes over me/Through a tunnel of the mind/Perhaps a present or future time oh, oh/Out of nowhere comes this sound/This melody that keeps spinning ‘round and ‘round/Pyramidal locomotion/From this mystic unknown zone/Hearin’ the twilight/Hearin’ the twilight, twilight tone.”

Released in 1979, listening to the song now 46 years later has convinced me it hasn’t aged at all. Its music is actually that of the 1959 TV series “The Twilight Zone.” The writers of The Manhattan Transfer’s version added lyrics, resulting to a danceable song.

1959, 1979 — so 20th century, so ancient, so archaeological.

Let’s move forward to “Twilight” then, the 2008 movie that made Lautner popular, and also making his lookalike Diwata popular. That’s how luck sometimes works. Which means if there’s no Lautner, there would be no Lautner lookalike, and, therefore, no Diwata? Hmmm.

Jacob did not say “What happened, Bella?” in “Twilight” but all of his TLC — tender loving care — for Bella could be summed as that question: What happened, Bella? Which Diwata was able to utter in his dialogue for the “Kalokalike Face 2: Level Up” contest in “It’s Showtime” in 2013: “What hafen, Vella?”

Success stories make us happy and hopeful. I now follow Diwata on Facebook and each time he has a new post about one more endorsement or achievement, I’m so grateful that life has given him another chance. Because surely there are other Kalokalike contestants who are still wishing for their big break.

He has remained realistic, though, as he makes the most of his resurgence. He’s aware that it may not last forevermore. Still, I do wish his current success will continue and level up to greater accomplishments.

According to Lao Tzu, “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” Or, as the viral video goes where Niña talks about sakses, er, success, “Parang nag-imagine ka, nakikita mo sa imagine mo, Wow ang taas ko na. Gano’n. Makikita mo sa imagine mo, Sakses ka eh. Bigla kang sumakses eh. Pero estep by the estep pala bago ka sumakses. Pero yong na-imagine mo, bigla kang sumakses.”

For most people, success is about wealth and power. The more wealth and power, the more success. But there are people who believe that health is wealth, and with that kind of wealth, they have power and success.

Success’s definition is to each his own. But better adopt the definition that you can live with forevermore.
