THE executive board and the technical working group of the Gingoog Bay Alliance (GBA), led by its chairman, Talisayan Mayor Rico Taray, are addressing the alarming problem of rabies in the bay area, with 3,473 identified cases.
During the 4th quarter meeting on November 28 at Badiangon Water Park in Gingoog City, Taray expressed concern, stating, “This is alarming.”
The GBA encompasses the city of Gingoog and the municipalities of Magsaysay, Medina, Talisayan, and Balingoan, all located in the eastern part of Misamis Oriental.
In her presentation, Dr. Agnes Centino, Gingoog City Assistant Health Officer, revealed that out of the total 3,473 animal bite victims in the area, 1,358 were under the age of 15 years old. This information is based on the January to September 2023 animal bite victim report.
Gingoog City recorded the highest number of animal bite victims, with 2,182 cases, including 636 minors below the age of 15, according to Taray.
Mayor Charlie Buhisan of Magsaysay urged all local government units, especially veterinarians, to fully implement their local ordinances to prevent rabies. Gingoog City Mayor Erick Cañosa also called on pet owners to be responsible for their pets.
Taray added that out of a total of 2,237 dogs, 1,193 cats, and 43 other unvaccinated animals.
“There is a need for heightened awareness regarding rabies,” he said.
Dr. Centino proposed expanding the information campaign against rabies, suggesting that every elementary school student learn about the dangers of rabies through the Department of Education curriculum.
Balingoan Mayor Aaron Paul Unabia, son of the provincial governor, emphasized the importance of vaccinating every pet, stating, “Every pet, like dogs and cats and others, must be vaccinated.”
Taray mentioned that the alliance is also exploring measures to control the increasing population of dogs and cats.
