AROUND 20,000 bamboos will be planted simultaneously today across Mindanao in an effort led by the Department of Science and Technology Region 10 (DOST-10) and 18 local governments.
The initiative, starting at 9 am, seeks to set a Guinness World Record for the most people planting bamboo simultaneously.
The event, dubbed “Kawayanihan: A Circular Economy Movement,” highlights Mindanao’s focus on bamboo as a sustainable resource.
DOST Undersecretary Sancho Mabborang emphasized the significance of bamboo in the region’s efforts.
“We aim to set a Guinness World Record and showcase the potential of Filipinos in becoming global players in the bamboo industry,” Mabborang said.

Mabborang added that bamboo, known for its resilience, was chosen because it symbolizes Filipinos' strength in overcoming challenges.
Bukidnon 1st District Congressman Joeman Alba, whose province is participating, noted bamboo’s potential as a sustainable alternative to hardwood, capable of absorbing 30% more carbon than other trees.
Alba also pointed out bamboo’s economic potential, stating that it can alleviate poverty by producing various products with minimal machinery.
The planting event will involve over 4,500 planters across 18 locations, including Cagayan de Oro, Davao del Norte, Davao del Sur, North Cotabato, and Agusan del Norte. Each bamboo planted will be geo-tagged to ensure monitoring of its growth.
Both Mabborang and Alba expressed confidence that the event would secure the Guinness record while promoting bamboo as a key player in environmental sustainability and poverty alleviation.
