The provincial government of Misamis Oriental is now on its final stage of preparation for the colourful joint celebration of its 87th founding anniversary and the 4th Kuyamis Festival 2017 on Jan. 9 to 13 next year, Gov. Yevgeny Vincente Emano said in a statement.
The weeklong celebration at the de Lara Park starts with the raising of the national flag and a Holy Mass.
Governor Emano said the Kuyamis Festival is gaining popularity as one of the regional tourism festivals in the country and his total development plan of the province anchored on tourism is now a reality.
“Our total development plan anchored on tourism has proven to be attainable and sustainable,” Gov. Emano declared.
Among the highlights of the weeklong celebration are the booth exhibits, meat and livestock show, tiangge sa kapitolyo, partners and food expo, coconut tree planting and the selection of the Miss Kuyamis Festival 2017.
Most of the exhibit booths sponsored by various municipalities will showcase the tourist spots of their own areas and food delicacies mostly made from the coconut.
A nightly entertainment will be presented by cultural performers from several tourism clusters, towns, schools and other groups.
“Kuyamis is a Subanen word for a variety of sweet coconut that grows abundantly in our province. When the Spaniards came, kuyamis was corrupted to Misamis and later on was used to refer to our province,” the Governor explained the interelationship of the two celebrations.
Misamis Oriental used to belong to one “rajannate” of Butuan in the 10 century.
In the year 1929, the Legislative Act 3537 was passed that approved the break up of the province ‘Misamis” into two (2) provinces – Misamis Occidental and Misamis Oriental.
However, it was Republic Act 3777 that was approved in November 1939 that formally created the province of Misamis Oriental and Don Gregorio Pelaez became the first governor. (pio misor)
