CAMP Evangelista yesterday sharply criticized the New People’s Army (NPA) even as it questioned its sincerity in its call for a ceasefire in northern Mindanao and Caraga as a condition for the release of a captured soldier. Maj. Gen. Oscar Lactao, commander of the 4th Infantry Division, cited the NPA attack in Barangay Hindangon in Gingoog City that resulted in the killing of three militiamen on Sunday night. (See related story on col. 6, page 1) Lactao said he has taken note that the NPA called for a 10-day ceasefire last week after rebels seized Pfc. Adonis Jessie Lupeba in Barangay Alagatan, Gingoog City, in July 11. “That’s the reason why we cannot trust these criminals. How can the government consider their demand if they keep on showing insincerity?” asked Lactao. “We (will) give justice to our soldiers who were brutally killed by the NPA bandits and will not let these criminals roam around and threaten the peace-loving people in this side of the country,” Lactao said. The military said murder, multiple frustrated homicide, frustrated murder, damage to properties, and kidnapping would be filed against the rebels in connection with the Gingoog attacks. Lt. Col. Jose Eriel Niembra, commander of 58th Infantry Battalion, immediately ordered the troops to stay alert and conduct perimeter patrols while coordinating with the police. He also ordered troops to conduct blocking and pursuit operations against rebels.
