FOR the first time since March 2025, I attended a party without eating carbs. Yay.

I “ignored” the cakes, durian, rambutan, truffle pasta, Korean cream cheese garlic bread, bruschetta, veggie salad, peanuts, fruit shakes, soda, etc. If this party happened before my carnivore reboot, I would have binged on all these, and ordered the resto’s bilo-bilo which is, er, was one of my most favorite carbs.

To stop myself from one more carbo-loading binge, I kept thinking of the carbs’ side effects which I was still experiencing during the party, although at a lower intensity by then: gum pain, body aches, muscle pain, the blues, with the recovering left knee always complaining. Healing is impossible if I don’t go strict carnivore. So, I focused on the buffet’s proteins and fats: lechon, lechon baka, salmon, shrimps, and scallops. Yum!

I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve had a carnivore reboot. But this time, I’m keeping my fingers crossed I can finally be a carnivore forevermore. Because my body gets confused when I’m carnivore today, high-carb tomorrow, carnivore the next day. Ano ba talaga?

I’m always on wish-ko-lang mode while listening to other carnivores’ testimonies about how their body aches, muscle pains, and illnesses have gone to Siberia. Which never happens overnight. It will take months and even years. Meaning, if I’m eating carbs again on, say, the tenth day of what’s supposed to be my nth carnivore journey, I’ll be back to Day One again the morning after. The secret behind its success is to stick to carnivore to experience its perks.

And just when I’m finally back to carnivore again, two food stalls at SM City CDO Uptown are now selling tiramisu. Name the tiramisu flavor you like, and they have it, including ube which is my most favorite as proven by my cravings for bilo-bilo and halo-halo which have ube. What happened to, “Once you make a decision, the universe conspires to make it happen”? That’s according to Ralph Waldo Emerson, by the way.

The universe seems to conspire the other way: I’ve made a decision to go strict carnivore, and all these ube food items begin to sprout here, there, and everywhere. Tsk tsk.

Let’s see when I’ll finally lose my appetite for carbs. Will it take days, weeks, months, years? If years, que horror.

My carb journey is kind of “One Battle After Another.” Which stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Benicio del Toro, and Sean Penn.

There’s this scene where my jaw dropped to the floor. But if I’ll put details here, that will be spoiler alert galore.

I watched the movie on Wednesday at SM CDO Downtown Premier (SMDT) amidst the trending dirty-water news in Cagayan de Oro. And I was at SMDT on Saturday to watch “A Big Bold Beautiful Journey,” unaware that the alleged water contamination had already begun.

I had brunch at Hap Chan on Saturday, and drank its service water. Had the cinema’s hotdog bites for brunch on Wednesday, and that’s with the free bottled water. So far, so good, puera buyag.

But some friends and their families have become victims.

By Sept. 21, while the Pinoy was busy with the protest rallies, the joke was that the Cagayanon couldn’t attend because of diarrhea and vomiting. Funny, but painful especially for those who were admitted to hospitals.
