AN abandoned mining site in an upland village near the boundaries of this city and Misamis Oriental is a disaster waiting to happen unless addressed at the soonest time possible, a government mining engineer said yesterday. Mining Engineer Romeo Tidadul of the Mining and Geosciences Bureau of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (MGB-DENR 10) made this assessment after an ocular inspection of an abandoned mining site in Sitio Benoni, Barangay Tingalan, Opol town, Misamis Oriental on Tuesday. He called on city hall and the capitol to pull their resources and work together to prevent the disaster from taking place. Tidadul told the Gold Star Daily that they saw cracks on the ground of the abandoned mining site which happened to be beside Iponan River. “Sa oras nga matabonan ang suba along Iponan River, makahimo kini sa morag dam, ug kon mobigay ang yuta nga nakatabon sa suba, delikado ang (flashfloods) along Iponan ug Pagatpat area(s),” Tidadul said. He also said MGB has come up with a proposal on how to avert the potential threat of flashfloods and landslides which he said includes “urgent engineering mitigating measures.” “Ang akong recommendation ana, himo-an kanag benching, ihagdan-hagdan kanang abandoned mining site sa bukid sa Barangay Tingalan aron dili mag-land slide padulong sa Iponan River,” he said. Iponan River is a tributary of the wider Cagayan River. Tidadul said his office submitted the proposal to both Cagayan de Oro Mayor Oscar Moreno and Misamis Oriental Gov. Yevgeny Vincente Emano so city hall and capitol would shoulder the cost of building the necessary infrastructure. “Kinahanglan gyud unta nga si Mayor Moreno ug Gov.
