THE state weather bureau is expecting the second wave of a wind system to affect Mindanao today. The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said the southwest monsoon or “habagat” would likely bring cloudy skies with light to moderate rains and isolated thunderstorms over Mindanao until tomorrow. The southwest monsoon is a wind system from the southwest or south that brings heavy rainfall to southern Asia; it influences large climatic regions and reverses direction seasonally. By Thursday, a tropical cyclone with international name “TS Soudelor” is expected to enter the eastern boarder of the Philippine area. If it does, it would be given the local name “Hanna.” Pagasa said the weather disturbance would enhance the southwest monsoon, and it could bring light to moderate rains over Mindanao, Palawan, and southern Visayas until Friday. Within this period, partly cloudy to cloudy skies with light to moderate rainshowers or thunderstorms would also prevail over the rest of the country, including Metro Manila. A mixture of sunny and rainy weather prevailed across the country yesterday. Pagasa weather forecaster Shaira Nonot said it was due to the intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ), thick clouds coming from the south of Asia which are a breeding ground for low-pressure areas or potential cyclones.
