TALISAYAN, one of the oldest towns in the eastern part of Misamis Oriental, will celebrate its 139th founding anniversary on August 9.
Town Mayor Rico Taray said the local government is well prepared for the festivities which will begin on Monday and will culminate on August 9.
Taray said the festivities will open with his “Report to the People” during the flag-raising on Monday.
The sashing rites of the Miss Tourism 2023, opening of the Agro Fair Display Contest, Urban Gardening Demo Contest, DepEd Night, and the presentation of the Miss Tourism 2023 candidates will follow on the same day.
Taray said the other events that will highlight this year’s celebration are the Open Motocross Competition, Miss Tourism 2023 Coronation Night on August 8.
On the final day, there will be a Civic Parade, the Drum and Lyre Competition, Boxing at the Park, and the Bulawanong Tingog Grand Finals and Awarding Night.
Talisayan originally celebrated its foundation every July 31st but in 2018 it was learned that the date was wrong, Taray said.
It was subsequently moved from July 31 to August 9 through Municipal Ordinance No. 856- 2019, during the administration of then-Mayor Rommel Maslog, now-vice mayor.
The correction of the date was made after finding out based on the record from the National Archives of the Philippines that July 31, 1864, is not the correct date of the creation of the town, said Vice Mayor Maslog in a phone interview this morning.
Maslog explained that July 31, 1864, was only the establishment of the first "Parokya of Talisayan" but not the town’s foundation.
Talisayan used to be a barrio of Balingasag town and it was created as a separate town on August 9, 1884, Taray said.
Taray added that Talisayan once was the largest town in Misamis Oriental and the proud mother town of Kinoguitan, Balingoan, Medina, Gingoog City, and Magsaysay until the early 20th century.
