The University of the Philippines (UP) College of Medicine (UPCM) honored the scholarship provision of the Philippine Red Cross (PRC) and its Chairman and CEO, Richard “Dick” Gordon to UPCM’s medical students during a “Donor Appreciation Ceremony” held at UP Manila on January 30.
PRC is the biggest full scholarship provider of the UPCM to date. On August 26, 2022, the PRC granted scholarships to twelve (12) UPCM’s economically disadvantaged and deserving medical students. Throughout the duration of their medical course at UPCM, the organization will cover their expenses such as tuition, miscellaneous and laboratory fees, student fund, book allowance, uniform, internet access, lodging, living allowance, transportation, as well as their board exam review and application fees.
"We are currently supporting UPCM’s med students who came from different parts of the country, including those from Mindanao, where there is a disparity in healthcare access as compared to other regions. I hope that through the organizations and the donors that are present today, we can add more scholars," Chairman Gordon added.
He also announced that this year, the PRC will add 12 more students in its scholarship program, saying, “I believe it is a privilege to be a part of this wonderful effort to thrive and educate principled doctors, and that is why this year, PRC will extend our scholarship program to students of UPCM Doctor of Medicine-Master of Public Health (MD-MPH).”
Chairman Gordon expressed gratitude to Dean Charlotte Chiong of UPCM, Dr. Michael Tee, UP Manila Chancellor; Dr. Carmencita Padilla, former UP Manila Chancellor; Dr. Gerardo Legaspi, Director of Philippine General Hospital; Dr. Eva Maria Cutiongco-Dela Paz, NIH Executive Director; Dr. Greg Pastorfide, Member of the UP Board of Regents; Dr. Gina Pastorfide; Dr. Rody Sy, Former Chairman of UP Medical Foundation; Dr. Grace Javier Alfonso, Executive Director of TV UP, and all the other donors for making the initiative possible.
