LONG weekends are a rare gift, a chance to break free from the mundane and the chance to venture into the unknown. I awoke with an insatiable urge to explore the northern part of Mindanao, camera in tow. My first plan to visit a mining town swiftly took a back seat in favor of a city famed for its historic balangays—a decision that would set the tone for a weekend of spontaneous adventure.

My first stop was a quaint café nestled beside a charming bookshop. The ambiance was enchanting, yet my restless spirit soon propelled me towards the surfing capital of the Philippines. This impulsive detour was a reminder of the serendipity that often goes with unplanned adventures.

Navigating unfamiliar roads felt like my take on Robert Frost’s “The Road Less Travelled.” I relied on the occasional arrow and the kindness of locals for directions. The “lip language”—using one’s lips to point a direction—is common in the countryside.

The cool breeze and intermittent rain were more than just a refreshing touch. It exemplifies the town’s unique blend of modernity and provincial charm. This vibrant place, where history and modernity seamlessly blend, was a delightful revelation. It's becoming rare these days to find a place where you feel nostalgic and hopeful at the same time.

True to its reputation, the town greeted me with frequent showers. Yet, the rain did little to dampen the spirits of its residents and visitors. I relished a delightful dinner with friends, our conversation flowing as freely as the wine. An impromptu city tour led us to a lively bar-café, where the electric atmosphere and live music invigorated us.

Unplanned activities are more fun than having to follow a detailed schedule. It's not like we’re on a team-building session. There’s an undeniable beauty in the unpredictable.

On my way back, I stumbled upon a picturesque bay. Fortuitously, a single suite was available, and I seized the opportunity to stay the night. Despite the persistent rain, I was eager to capture the post-rain beauty—dewdrops on petals and leaves were a photographer’s dream. I'm not claiming I’m a professional photographer. I just felt like one.

Exhausted yet content, I experienced the most restful sleep. Suddenly, I awoke, realizing I was still in my bed. The vivid memories of my weekend wanderlust were merely a dream. Smiling, I resolved that it was time to turn that dream into reality.

The unpredictability of travel reveals its true beauty and adds to its charm. It urges us to embrace the moment and cherish the unexpected.

This philosophy extends to our work lives, as well. We must be ready for whatever comes our way. It's those little hump challenges that stimulate our minds. Unlike machines, we can think and feel. And it’s that human element that makes all the difference.
