By Nora Soriño, Iligan City Bureau Chief Iligan City — The principal witness of the cases against embattled city mayor Celso Regencia will testify today. Norberto Altres, spokesperson of former congressman Vicente Belmonte, Jr said that their witness, Dominador Tumala is scheduled to testify on the cases at Branch 77 at the Regional Trial Court in Quezon City, which will be presided over by Judge Ferdinand Baylon. The cases against Regencia, to note, are multiple murder and multiple frustrated murder which is in connection with the ambush of the convoy of Belmonte near the Laguindingan Airport on Dec. 11, 2014 where three of his aides and several others were wounded. Belmonte himself, survived the attack of which Regencia allegedly masterminded. To recall, after a warrant of arrest was issued against the mayor, the latter went into hiding surfacing only during the filing of Certificates of Candidacy for the May 9 elections, this year. He was then detained at the city jail at Tipanoy until now though attempts have been made to transfer him at the provincial jail at Misamis Oriental in Cagayan de Oro and later at a facility at Camp Bagong Diwa in Bicutan. Regencia’s transfer is according to an order by the Supreme Court. This is after the cases were transferred to Quezon City. The hearing on today is still on the mayor’s Petition for Bail. Every time there is a scheduled hearing supporters of Regencia always manage to block the jail’s entrance in an effort to prevent his transfer. Atty. Leo Zaragoza, a lawyer for Regencia said that witness Tumala has had two affidavits, with the first made on December last year –– it did not mention Regencia. In January this year, however, Tumala executed another affidavit that points to Regencia as the “mastermind” behind the ambush of Belmonte’s convoy.
