ZAMBOANGA City — Parents rushed to Ateneo de Zamboanga High School in Barangay Tumaga Tuesday morning to fetch their children after a shooting left two people dead and two others injured.

City Police Director PCol. Fidel Fortaleza said at 8:40 a.m. that the situation was already under control.

“There is zero threat already,” Fortaleza said.

The two fatalities included a high school student who was identified as the suspected gunman, according to officials.

Mayor Khymer Adan Olaso said the suspect used two firearms during the attack. The suspect reportedly first fired at a teacher before shooting a fellow student, who died.

The suspect later died by suicide, Olaso said.

University President Ernald Andal confirmed that the shooting was over and there was no longer an active shooter on campus.

“As of now, we confirm that there are two fatalities,” Andal said. “There are no more active shooters.”

Andal said the university was coordinating with authorities and would provide additional information as it becomes available.

“We do not want any of these things to happen. We wish to prioritise the safety of all our students,” he said.

Two other people were injured in the incident, according to the mayor.

Authorities were investigating the circumstances of the shooting, including reports that the suspect may have been wearing a body camera and livestreaming the attack.

The incident comes less than two months after another deadly school shooting in Tacloban City, renewing concerns over campus safety and access to firearms.

Authorities are expected to provide further details as the investigation continues.
