Rhona Canoy SO... Evidently, my last two columns ruffled some feathers and managed to offend some readers. Please, allow me to say... wait, I’m not done pissing you off yet! The events of the last eight days are leaving me almost speechless. I said almost. If our current situation were a geometric figure, it would have four sides--hilarious, historic, ridiculous, and troubling. The ball started rolling when Ferdie Marcos finally got stuck in the ground. And what a firestorm that created. I’m not going to step into the boiling cauldron of whether he deserves to be buried in LNMB or not. Reactions to this range from passionate (for both anti and pro camps) to the ridiculous (as seen on social media memes). Suffice it to say, dust to dust. I don’t think that his heroism was what  qualified  his burial in the National Cemetery.  But it is a fact that Marcos was a soldier, and a president. The atrocities committed during martial law are also fact. Extra-judicial killings, torture, disappearances, massacres. And all the anger over lots and lots of stolen government money. No, we shall not forget. And neither should we forget that similar atrocities were committed during the terms of all other presidents. And still are to this day. So they should be held accountable as well. Follow this with the House hearings on the killing of Albuera Mayor Espinosa, the capture-cum-surrender and subsequent testimony of Ronnie Dayan, the appearance of Kerwin Espinosa--and the circus comes to town. I appreciate that the whole country is engrossed, but I wonder what exactly people are interested in. When Tita Lei finally admitted to getting lei’d during Mareng Winnie’s one-on-one, I don’t know that she got the sympathy she hoped for. Certainly, all our honorables who questioned Dayan spent most of their precious allotted minutes on establishing that he shared a bed with the Senadora. And those of us watching the broadcast kept asking why the obvious important  questions weren’t being asked. I still don’t know why a warrant was necessary to search a jail cell. And why it was served after the fact. Or why officers of the law felt the need to break into the Baybay jail. And why the judge, whose job it is to properly interpret the law, was never asked to justify why the warrant was issued. Some, if not most, of our legislators who are menbers of the investigating committees have certainly impressed me with the lethargic nature of their mental wheels. It is troubling that we entrusted them to come up with the laws that govern us. It is troubling that Kevin Espinosa seems more forthcoming and credible than those whom we trust to defend and enforce the law. It is troubling to see how much excrement is floating to the surface, and more troubling wondering how long this all has been covered up. Many, many years from new, history will decide who were the clowns, the jugglers, the trapeze artists, the magicians, the lion tamers, and who was the ultimate ringmaster. Let’s all just be glad we got frontow tickets to watch the spectacular show.
