GINGOOG CITY — Residents of Gingoog City will enjoy a local holiday on July 23 as the city celebrates its 66th Charter Day and 47th Grand Kaliga Festival, giving families and visitors a chance to join one of Misamis Oriental's biggest cultural events.
The special non-working day was declared under Presidential Proclamation No. 1224, signed by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., allowing government offices, most schools and many businesses to suspend regular operations for the annual celebration.
The day's main attraction is the Kaliga Festival Street Dancing Competition, followed by the Grand Kaliga Showdown, where five contingents will showcase colorful performances inspired by Gingoog's culture, heritage and traditions.
The street dancing parade starts at 1 p.m. from Gaisano Grand, passes along the National Highway to the Gingoog Integrated Bus Terminal, and ends at the People's Grandstand for the showdown.
Competing this year are Kalagonoy Integrated School, Barangay Daang Lungsod, Barangay 26, Gingoog City United College, and Gingoog City Colleges.
Acting City Tourism Officer Ramon N. Reyes said the contingents are ready to present performances highlighting the city's cultural identity, creativity and community pride.
This year's celebration carries the theme, "Bayang Pinag-isa, Bisig ng Pamilya, Indak na Pinamana," emphasizing unity, strong family ties and the preservation of cultural heritage through dance.
Mayor Erick G. Cañosa encouraged residents and visitors to witness the festivities and support the participating performers.
Meanwhile, Gingoog City Police Chief Lt. Col. Dennis de los Santos said police personnel have been deployed along the parade route and other activity areas to ensure peace, order and public safety throughout the celebration.
Thousands of residents and visitors are expected to line the streets and fill the People's Grandstand for the city's annual showcase of music, dance and local culture.
