ILIGAN CITY— Communities in Northern Mindanao can expect continued peace and security efforts under the new commander of the 2nd Mechanized Infantry "Magbalantay" Brigade, who pledged to put both mission success and soldier welfare at the centre of his leadership.
Brig. Gen. Bernardo A. Taqueban formally assumed command of the brigade during an installation ceremony on July 24 at Camp Sultan Badrodin in Barangay Maria Cristina, Iligan City.
Taqueban said he will continue the brigade's peace and security operations while ensuring that soldiers receive the support, training and professional development needed to carry out their duties effectively.
"Our soldiers are our greatest asset," he said, stressing that while accomplishing the brigade's mission remains the top priority, protecting the welfare, readiness and growth of every soldier is equally important.
He also called on troops to embrace innovation, adaptability and teamwork as they respond to evolving security challenges, while strengthening partnerships with local government units, communities and other stakeholders to sustain peace and development efforts.
Taqueban appealed for continued public support, saying lasting peace can only be achieved through cooperation between the military and civilian communities.
He officially took over after serving as acting brigade commander since February, crediting previous commanders for building a disciplined and professional unit that enabled a smooth leadership transition.
Presiding over the ceremony, Armor Division Commander Maj. Gen. Ronel R. Manalo reminded the new brigade chief that command is more than authority—it carries responsibility for the brigade's mission, operational readiness, discipline, personnel welfare and the protection of communities within its area of responsibility.
Manalo said the brigade's name, "Magbalantay," or "to stand watch," reflects the need for soldiers to remain vigilant and prepared even before threats emerge.
He also expressed confidence in Taqueban's leadership, citing his professionalism and dedication throughout his military career.
