A farmer was killed by a ‘pong’ ball in Purok Sumagaysay, Barangay Rogongon on Friday, September 5, authorities said.

The victim was found on the pavement of a highway with a disfigured head and covered in blood.

Initial investigations revealed that the victim, who had a history of depression and anxiety, was at his farm with his wife and father-in-law when he suddenly yelled, “Mag unong ta!” His wife and father-in-law fled to safety.

A neighbor who attempted to intervene was slightly injured when the victim put a ‘pong’ ball in his mouth and blew it at the neighbor’s face.

A ‘pong’ ball is a homemade explosive device known to kill wild boar. The name ‘pong’ is derived from its resemblance to a pingpong ball.

The neighbor was taken to Gregorio T. Lluch Memorial Hospital, where he is in stable condition.

According to a police report, the victim sometimes suffered from anxiety and depression that led to his suicidal attempts.
