MUNAI, Lanao del Norte — Forty-five young leaders from four barangays in Munai have completed a three-day leadership summit designed to equip them with the skills and confidence to promote peace and prevent violence in their communities.
The Youth for Peace Youth Leadership Summit, organised by the 44th Infantry Battalion, was held from July 24 to 26 in Barangay Lininding. It brought together 35 male and 10 female participants from Barangays Lininding, Ramain, Pendulonan, and Poblacion.
Lt. Col. Jeremy Damonsong, commander of the 44th Infantry Battalion, urged the participants to use what they learned to become peace advocates in their homes, schools, and villages.
"This summit is not just about learning leadership skills. You are bringing home a mission—to become young advocates of peace in your families, schools, and barangays," he said.
Damonsong said effective leadership starts with humility and understanding how to follow before leading others. During the summit, participants tackled real-life issues such as bullying, discrimination, illegal drugs, violent extremism, and conflict through group discussions and role-playing activities.
He encouraged the youth to choose unity over division and use their influence to inspire others.
"Peace is not merely the absence of conflict. It is built through respect, cooperation, and compassion. It begins with each one of us," he said.
Damonsong added that investing in young people today helps prepare the next generation of responsible community leaders.
Participant Johainah P. Sehawi said the summit deepened her understanding of the role young people play in creating peaceful communities.
"I realised that the youth can make a difference. I want to use what I learned to become a good example and help others," she said.
Another participant, Saibin L. Macabato, said the programme helped him overcome his fear of public speaking and boosted his confidence.
"Before joining the summit, I was afraid to speak in front of people. Now, I have the courage to stand on stage and express myself," he said.
He added that the experience taught him responsibility, teamwork, and the importance of serving as a positive role model for fellow youth.
The summit forms part of the Philippine Army's continuing efforts to empower young people as partners in sustaining peace, preventing violent extremism, and strengthening community unity across Lanao del Norte.
