ILIGAN City — The 2nd Mechanized Infantry “Magbalantay” Brigade of the Philippine Army marked its 16th activation anniversary Wednesday, Sept. 9, highlighting its role in maintaining peace and supporting development in Lanao and nearby communities.

The anniversary was held at Camp Sultan Badrodin in Barangay Maria Cristina under the theme, “Magbalantay @16: Sandigan ng Hukbong Katihan, Matatag na Nagbabantay ng Kapayapaan.”

Lt. Gen. Rey B. Alemania, commander of the Joint Sustainment Command and guest of honor, said the brigade’s 16 years of service showed its continuing role in protecting communities and supporting the Army’s mandate.

One of the brigade’s highlighted efforts was its leadership in the Camp Bilal Transformation Government Coordination initiative, which brings local stakeholders, including former members of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front, together in planning and budgeting as part of the peace process in Lanao.

Alemania also said the brigade will work with the Philippine National Police in securing the BARMM parliamentary election on Sept. 14, 2026.

“We are your shield,” Alemania said, assuring the public that security forces will work to help ensure a peaceful election.

Beyond military operations

Brigade commander BGen. Bernardo A. Taqueban said the unit’s role goes beyond military operations.

He said being a guardian of peace also means earning the trust of communities, local governments, the PNP and other partners.

“We have been watching, protecting, and serving our people,” Taqueban said.

He added that the brigade’s success should not be measured only by the number of missions it has conducted but also by the trust it has earned from the communities it serves.

Col. Rommel M. Perenia, deputy brigade commander and one of the unit’s founding members since its origins as Task Force Lanao in 2010, said the brigade has worked to keep Lanao and Iligan free from major security threats.

Perenia described the brigade’s approach as a “triangle of development” involving security, economic growth and good governance.

“We do not merely defend the land,” he said. “We help protect the conditions for development.”

New barracks inaugurated

The anniversary program also included the inauguration of new personnel barracks supported by local government units and congressional representatives.

Alemania thanked the local governments and other agencies for helping provide better facilities for soldiers.

The ceremony also honored soldiers who died in the line of duty, recognized military and civilian awardees, and paid tribute to two retiring senior noncommissioned officers.

Taqueban said changes in leadership will not change the brigade’s mission.

“The command may change, but the mission does not,” he said. “The brigade belongs to all of us.”
