A FIRE broke out at a slum in Zayas, Upper Carmen, killing a three-year old boy, hurting five others, and razing to the ground at least 20 houses that were mostly made of highly combustible materials. At least 150 people, many of whom are children, have been left homeless, and are being taken care of at the nearby Island Kids Philippines compound. PO3 Paul Naces of the Carmen police identified the dead as three-year old Nathan Dave Cabigkis, and those who were injured as the boy’s father Roger Cabigkis, Jessica Cabigkis, Angelica Cabigkis, Alet Cabigkis, and Rudy Gastahan. The injured were rushed to the Northern Mindanao Medical Center (NMMC). Fire Insp. Arnold Lagbas, chief of the Carmen Fire Station, said the fire started in Roger Cabigkis’s house located near the city dump at around 3:10 am.Lagbas said the fire was put out 19 minutes later, after it destroyed some 20 houses which were mostly makeshift. Most of the residents were scavengers.
