POLICE regional director Chief Supt. Timoteo Pacleb said Senior Supt. Nelson Aganon was installed as the city’s new police chief yesterday because it was what Police Director General Ronald dela Rosa wanted.

It was Pacleb who personally installed Aganon as director of the Cagayan de Oro City Police Office, an event where Mayor Oscar Moreno was conspicuously absent.

Moreno however sent councilors Romeo Calizo and Jay Pascual to represent him at the Cocpo headquarters in Carmen.

In a text message, Moreno said Aganon merely took over in an acting capacity.

“My involvement in not yet needed,” Moreno said.

Based on the rules, a local chief executive chooses the local police director in a list of police officials recommended by their superiors.

Pacleb said the list of nominees has yet to be submitted to Moreno. He did not say if Aganon would be in the list.

Aganon, who replaced Senior Supt. Robert Roy Bahian, served as chief of the National Police’s Regional Mobile Group before his present assignment.

Pacleb said dela Rosa wanted Aganon to become Cagayan de Oro’s police chief because of his performance record during the Marawi crisis last year. Pacleb did not elaborate.

Supt. Mardy Hortillosa said Bahian was relieved of his post in an order issued as early as March 23.

Bahian was directed to report to the office of Camp Alagar’s support group after serving the city as police director for one year and two weeks. (nitz arancon)
