HUNDREDS of concerned citizens gathered at the Carmen Barangay Hall today, November 22, to show their support for Barangay Chairman Raineir Joaquin ‘Kikang’ Uy.
They voiced strong criticism against Cagayan de Oro 1st District Representative Lordan Suan and the Commission on Elections (Comelec) for allegedly persecuting Uy through what they claim are unfounded accusations and a smear campaign.
Uy, in a public statement, dismissed Suan’s attempts to discredit him, emphasizing his commitment to serving the community with integrity.
“I work in good faith, and it is not within my power to accept voter registrations. That responsibility lies solely with the Commission on Elections,” Uy clarified, underscoring that barangay officials have no authority over voter approvals.
The controversy stems from an alleged increase in voter registrations in Barangay Carmen, which Suan has used as a basis to demand an investigation, suggesting possible irregularities.
However, Uy insisted that the process was above board, attributing the rise in registrations to citizens responding to Comelec’s call.
“This is a clear attempt by Suan’s camp to create difficulties for our residents,” Uy said.
“We only provided the necessary certification for new voters, as required.”
The situation has sparked significant concern among residents, who view the allegations as part of a broader political strategy to destabilize Uy’s candidacy for congressman in the city’s 1st district.
Uy remains resolved to continue his campaign, focusing on community development and addressing the needs of his constituents.
“My priority has always been the well-being of the people in our barangay,” Uy said.
As tensions rise, the community’s support for Uy highlights the broader issue of political dynamics and the need for fair electoral practices, ensuring that the democratic process is upheld without bias or manipulation.
