CAGAYAN de Oro City — A forecast 43°C heat index has prompted the suspension of classes in all public schools in Cagayan de Oro on August 13 and 14, as authorities move to protect students from dangerous heat.
Mayor Rolando “Klarex” Uy ordered the suspension covering public schools from preschool to senior high school after the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) placed the forecast heat index at the Danger classification.
Private schools, colleges and universities were left to the discretion of their respective school heads. Ateneo de Cagayan University was among the schools that suspended classes on August 13.
PAGASA-Mindanao Regional Services Division forecast a heat index of up to 43°C at its Laguindingan Airport monitoring station in Misamis Oriental on August 13 and 14.
The extreme heat is occurring alongside El Niño conditions, which PAGASA said have developed over the tropical Pacific and are expected to intensify in the coming months.
Mindanao PAGASA Regional Services Division Weather Services Chief Anianita R. Fortich earlier said climate models indicate that El Niño could strengthen from moderate to strong between August and October before reaching a very strong level from October 2026 to January 2027.
PAGASA also warned that high heat index levels could continue into next week, prompting authorities to maintain precautions against heat-related illnesses.
For parents, the suspension offers relief amid the worsening heat.
Dina Neri of Tagoloan, whose child attends Sta. Ana Elementary School, said keeping children home was the safer option.
“Kay grabe gyud kaayo kainit, looy ang mga bata,” Neri said.
Authorities urged students, parents and school personnel to avoid prolonged exposure to extreme heat, especially during peak heat hours, and to continue monitoring official weather advisories.
