By NITZ ARANCON Correspondent NORTHERN Mindanao’s most populous public school for elementary graders registered a student population of over seven thousand, a slight increase compared to that of 2016’s. Dr. Paul Badon, City Central School assistant principal, said there were 6,954 students who enrolled in the public school last year, and the figures surged to over seven thousand as of yesterday. The figures could still shoot up given that the enrollment period would be until the end of the month. The pupils would be taught by 199 teachers. Badon said he has noted that there has been an increase in the number of transferees from other schools. Sixteen of the transferees, according to Badon, are evacuees from strife-torn Marawi City. Even without documents from their Marawi schools, the evacuees were enrolled so that their studies would not be disrupted. “Amo silang gi-enroll dinhi bisan walay ilang cards kay ayha ra nang mga school records kon malinaw na ang Marawi,” Badon said. Meanwhile, Camp Alagar said the city and other places in Region 10 were generally peaceful during the opening of classes yesterday. Supt. Lemuel Gonda, Camp Alagar spokesman, attributed this to police regional director Chief Supt. Agripino Javier’s order for local police offices to deploy all the officers they could send to the streets to man police assistance desks and ensure public safety and police visibility around schools. Gonda said  Javier also ordered officers to enforce zoning ordinances and local laws regulating certain establishments like computer gaming shops near schools. Vehicular traffic flows in the city were “manageable”as public schools opened their doors, said Roads and Traffic Administration chief Nonito Oclarit. Oclarit said he has taken note that there were still schools that have yet to start classes. But he said the RTA expects the traffic build-up in downtown Cagayan de Oro to turn from “moderate” to “heavy” in the coming days after all the schools have opened.
